The Kings Highway

The King's Highway of Jordan is one of the most ancient trade routes known across the world. Designed to serve the Middle East, it started in Egypt and expanded across the Sinai Peninsula into Aqaba, Jordan and Damascus. The Nabateans favoured this trade route for transporting spices and frankincense. The Highway also served as a pilgrimage road for Christians to visit holy places.

Those who love travelling by road will enjoy every minute on the King's Highway. It winds through various ecological zones with deep chasms, deserts and woody highlands. The Highway initially goes through the picture-perfect Heliopolis of Egypt to the eastern Clysmaa and Egyptian forts in the Sinai Desert. You can sit back and relax as the path takes a northward turn though the beautiful Arabah and passes into the gorgeous Petra. The highway goes through the Crusader Fortress of Kerak and Shaubak, from Moab to the magnificent Madaba and connects Bosra with Damascus. It finally ends at Tadmor on the upper Euphrates.

Other beautiful sights on the way include the famous El-Qaser's Nabatean temple, the celebrated Byzantine church at Rabba, and other Islamic shrines. The best way to experience the King's Highway is to rent a car in Amman and drive down. You can take a couple of rest breaks at the service stations located at Petra, Madaba and Kerak.
