Planning a holiday to Petra is almost as exciting as actually getting there! Depending upon your location you can create an itinerary that lets you visit the highlights along your route. If you’re starting out from Amman, you can visit the baths, the triumphal arch and the hilltop temple at Jerash. From there you can head to the Castle of Ajloun and visit Um Qais as well.
Your first stop on the Kings Highway should be Madaba which houses several Byzantine mosaics. You can stop in at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church and then continue on to the holy place of Mount Nebo, which many believe is Moses’ burial spot.
Next on your itinerary should be Wadi Rum, which is a sight for sore eyes! This scenic desert has majestic sandstone mountains and is aptly called the Valley of the Moon. You’ll definitely want to linger a little longer at Wadi Rum just to enjoy its awe-inspiring shapes, color and immensity. You can choose to explore the region on camelback or hire a 4 X 4 vehicle to get you around quicker.
The Red Rose City of Petra awaits your visit and welcomes you with temples, tombs, palaces and desert rock monuments carved from the mountain. You will enjoy the walk through the Siq which is a fault in the canyon wall that leads to the magnificent Treasury. Do opt for the ‘Petraby Night’ show to enjoy Bedouin music amidst a sea of a thousand candles. At Petra, you can also visit the amphitheatre and other sites.
On your way back, take a dip in the Dead Sea and get a mud pack to relax, rejuvenate and prepare yourself for that trip back home.
